Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently wrapped up a significant four-day visit to Japan, where he underscored the burgeoning interest from Japanese enterprises in strengthening their investments and technological collaborations with India. Accompanied by a robust business delegation comprising nearly 200 members, Goyal engaged with Japanese firms across diverse sectors, including robotics, semiconductors, electronics, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing.

The visit is already yielding promising outcomes, with business discussions translating into potential investment prospects. Notably, a Japanese robotics company has identified an Indian counterpart to partner with for investment, with plans to initiate the manufacturing of robots in India. This development underscores the visit’s focus on amplifying the presence of Japanese companies in the Indian market, where approximately 1,500 Japanese firms currently operate. India is keen on significantly boosting Japanese investments across its emerging industries.

A pivotal component of the visit was the dialogue between the two nations on revisiting the India-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. This dialogue aims to address regulatory issues and explore avenues for enhanced business-to-business cooperation. Both countries are focused on fortifying their trade and investment links, setting an ambitious bilateral trade target of $27.47 billion for the fiscal year 2025-26, with a long-term vision of escalating it to $50 billion by 2030.

Goyal’s trip reflects a concerted effort to deepen economic ties between India and Japan, capitalizing on the shared interest in various high-growth sectors. The discussions held during this visit are expected to pave the way for more Japanese companies to establish operations in India, thereby contributing to India’s economic development and technological advancement.
