Apple’s Entry May Disrupt and Expand the Foldable Smartphone Market

by admin477351

Apple is reportedly poised to make its debut in the foldable smartphone arena with the introduction of its first foldable iPhone. Industry analysts suggest that this move could inject significant growth into a sector that has recently seen a slowdown in momentum. Despite a notable 8% decline in global foldable smartphone shipments in the first half of 2026, market research firms anticipate a robust recovery in the latter half of the year. Overall shipments for 2026 are forecasted to reach approximately 23 million units, with expectations of continued expansion into 2027.

The anticipated entry of Apple into the foldable market is expected to significantly alter the competitive landscape. According to Smart Analytics Global, Apple could quickly capture a substantial portion of the market, potentially accounting for 25% of global foldable shipments by the close of 2026. This share is projected to increase to about 41% by 2027. However, the introduction of Apple’s foldable iPhone may initially face challenges, including supply constraints due to the complexities involved in foldable manufacturing. Additionally, its expected price tag exceeding $2,000 might limit its early demand and availability, with Apple likely opting for a phased launch in select markets before a broader global rollout.

Research firm IDC foresees Apple’s entrance into the foldable segment as a catalyst for making it one of the fastest-growing sectors within the smartphone industry. Projections indicate that Apple could ship more than 17 million foldable iPhones by 2027, securing roughly 40% of the global foldable market. The overall foldable smartphone market is expected to grow, with estimates of 22.9 million units shipped in 2026, marking a 12.6% increase, followed by a climb to approximately 27 million units in 2027, representing an 18% growth rate.

Apple’s potential launch is likely to reshape the competitive dynamics in the foldable smartphone sector, presenting new challenges to established manufacturers such as Samsung, Huawei, Vivo, and Xiaomi. Reports indicate that Apple’s inaugural foldable device may feature a 5.5-inch cover display alongside a 7.8-inch foldable main display. It is also expected to be equipped with features like Touch ID, an A20 Pro chip manufactured on a 2-nanometer process, and dual 48-megapixel cameras.

If Apple successfully navigates the manufacturing hurdles and addresses the high price point of its foldable iPhone, its entry could provide a significant boost to the foldable smartphone category. This move could swiftly position Apple as a dominant force in the foldable market, potentially transforming consumer perceptions and driving innovation within the industry.
