Japan has unveiled a revised strategy for artificial intelligence (AI), aiming to bolster national security, advance domestic AI capabilities, and reduce dependency on international technology providers. The updated plan, which received approval on July 14, underscores the swift evolution of AI and heightened concerns over cybersecurity, coming just half a year after the initial strategy was launched.
In response to increasingly sophisticated AI models that have made cyber threats more complex and accessible, the Japanese government intends to reassess existing AI-related laws and frameworks. The strategy also emphasizes enhancing collaboration with global partners to tackle emerging security challenges. A pivotal goal is achieving greater “AI sovereignty,” which involves enhancing Japan’s capacity to develop and manage AI technologies independently.
The strategy introduces an AI Transformation (AX) initiative designed to integrate AI into various aspects of decision-making, industry, and workforce development. Priority will be given to investing in vertical AI, which targets sectors like healthcare and manufacturing, as well as physical AI, focusing on areas such as robotics and autonomous vehicles.
As part of its long-term economic growth plan, Japan aims to stimulate substantial public and private investment in these AI sectors. By the fiscal year 2040, the government targets attracting 23.1 trillion yen for vertical AI and 10.5 trillion yen for physical AI, highlighting the country’s commitment to becoming a leader in AI innovation and application.
