Japanese semiconductor-related companies are increasingly establishing themselves in India’s burgeoning semiconductor industry as the country seeks to develop a robust domestic chip manufacturing ecosystem. This initiative was underscored at Semicon India 2026 in New Delhi, where over 30 Japanese firms participated alongside Indian industry representatives to discuss investment opportunities, technology partnerships, supply chain solutions, and research and development strategies.
India is striving to position itself as a global semiconductor hub, with efforts spanning across chip materials, design, manufacturing, packaging, and testing. The Indian government is pushing to bolster domestic semiconductor capabilities and cultivate a skilled workforce to support this vision. However, while India boasts a large pool of engineering talent, the country still faces challenges related to a shortage of workers with specialized semiconductor skills.
Several Japanese companies are already forming partnerships with Indian firms to address these challenges and enhance India’s semiconductor infrastructure. For instance, Fujifilm is collaborating with Tata Electronics on advanced semiconductor materials. Additionally, Sumitomo Chemical is exploring cooperation on semiconductor material supply chains, and Enomoto is expected to offer production technology support.
In a significant move, Tokyo Electron plans to establish a training center in Gujarat by 2027. This initiative is aimed at developing engineers skilled in semiconductor manufacturing equipment, further contributing to workforce development and technology transfer between the two countries.
The growing involvement of Japanese companies is anticipated to strengthen India’s semiconductor supply chain and support the country’s ambitions to become a key player in the global semiconductor market. Industry officials express optimism that these partnerships will facilitate the transfer of technology and expertise, ultimately aiding in the development of a stronger semiconductor industry in India.
