In a recent meeting held in Hà Nội, Việt Nam and Japan have pledged to enhance their defence cooperation, focusing on key strategic areas. These include military training, cybersecurity, the development of the defence industry, United Nations peacekeeping efforts, and recovery initiatives from past conflicts. The discussions between Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence General Phan Văn Giang and General Uchikura Hiroaki, Chief of Staff of Japan’s Self-Defence Forces, aimed at strengthening bilateral defence ties and effectively implementing existing agreements.
General Phan Văn Giang underscored Việt Nam’s dedication to improving consultation and dialogue mechanisms and expanding cooperation among military branches. He stressed the importance of collaboration in defence technology, military medicine, and cybersecurity. According to General Giang, these defence relations are a crucial component of the broader Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations. He expressed appreciation for Japan’s support in areas such as personnel training, defence industry development, technology transfer, and post-war recovery initiatives. Furthermore, he advocated for increased opportunities for Vietnamese defence personnel to receive scholarships and training, particularly in science, engineering, and technology.
