Japan grappled with an intense heatwave on July 21 as a powerful high-pressure system sent temperatures soaring past 40°C in various regions. This marked the ninth year in a row that the country has experienced such extreme temperatures.
This year is particularly notable as it marked the first occurrence of temperatures exceeding 40°C since the introduction of the term “kokushobi” in April. The term, which translates to “cruelly hot days,” is used to describe days when temperatures reach this severe level.
The city of Tajimi in Gifu Prefecture recorded the highest temperature for the day, hitting 40.3°C. Nearby cities weren’t spared either, with Gujo reaching 40°C and Toyota in Aichi Prefecture experiencing 40.1°C.
By the middle of the afternoon, a staggering 255 out of the 914 weather observation stations across Japan reported temperatures of at least 35°C. This demonstrates the widespread impact of the heatwave affecting both eastern and western parts of the nation.
In light of these extreme conditions, the Environment Ministry, alongside the Japan Meteorological Agency, issued heatstroke alerts for 42 prefectures, the highest number this year. Authorities urged citizens to take precautions against heat-related illnesses by using air conditioning, staying well-hydrated, and ensuring adequate salt intake.
