Japan’s Defense Ministry is set to introduce a new procurement system aimed at integrating advanced technologies developed by startups into its defense equipment arsenal, as announced by Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi. This initiative is part of a fast-track program designed to bolster the participation of startups in the defense sector by offering upfront funding for technology development.
The ministry is particularly focused on innovations in drones, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technologies that could enhance modern warfare capabilities. The first round of the program will solicit proposals for the development of low-cost, mass-producible small attack drones and related equipment, specifically for the Ground Self-Defense Force and Maritime Self-Defense Force. Emphasis will be placed on utilizing domestically produced components.
Multiple companies will initially be chosen during the concept phase, with the selection narrowing as the process advances through prototype development and testing stages. This approach aims to foster a competitive environment that encourages the creation of innovative and effective solutions.
In addition to combat technologies, the ministry is looking for advancements that can improve logistics and personnel management. This includes technologies designed to enhance warehouse management, reduce staffing needs, minimize aircraft noise, and improve working conditions for personnel in the Air Self-Defense Force.
Applications for the first round of proposals will open on October 2. Through this new system, the Defense Ministry expects to accelerate the adoption of cutting-edge technologies, thereby strengthening Japan’s overall defense capabilities.
