Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi recently convened with Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale in Tokyo, signaling a fresh endeavor to enhance the bilateral ties between the two nations. This meeting underscores Japan’s commitment to deepening its relationship with the Solomon Islands amidst notable changes in the Pacific nation’s foreign policy brought about by its new administration.
During their discussions, the leaders decided to broaden development cooperation, which includes a commitment from Japan for 3 billion yen (approximately $18.3 million) in yen loans. They also agreed to foster greater exchanges between their peoples. Takaichi emphasized Japan’s intention to forge a “strong and prosperous cooperative relationship” with the Solomon Islands rooted in mutual values like freedom, democracy, the rule of law, and human rights. Prime Minister Wale expressed appreciation for Japan’s support, highlighting the necessity for assistance as Pacific island nations confront various economic and developmental hurdles.
This diplomatic meeting follows a pivotal shift in the Solomon Islands’ foreign policy. In 2019, the country transitioned its diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China, subsequently entering into a security agreement with Beijing in 2022. This agreement permitted Chinese naval vessels to access Solomon Islands’ ports and allowed Chinese security personnel to operate within the country, a move that has sparked concerns among regional allies regarding China’s growing strategic influence in the Pacific.
Since assuming office in May 2026, Prime Minister Wale has indicated a shift in foreign policy direction. He has committed to reviewing the security pact with China, voiced criticism over Beijing’s recent submarine-launched ballistic missile test in the Pacific, and has prioritized diplomatic visits to nations such as Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and Japan, which underscores a focus on strengthening ties with traditional partners.
For Japan, fortifying relations with the Solomon Islands aligns with its broader strategic vision of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, an initiative aimed at fostering regional stability, security, and cooperation. As a gesture of goodwill, Takaichi presented Wale with a football from the Nara Prefectural Football Association, a nod to the sport’s popularity in the Solomon Islands and Takaichi’s close connections to Nara Prefecture.
